Seed sowing is it too late?

granmagranma Posts: 1,933
After a good sort out I've found a shoe box absolutely full of small seed pkts from cottage garden society  ,and hardy plant society  .a mix of alpine seed too which a late uncle gave me , so they are at  least ten year old. There must be three hundred packs at least .
Is anyone still sowing seed in seed trays in may ?
I shall sort some out for next year and try to sow them at the right time.

I started some runner beans in May and will keep sowing lettuce and radish, but no more flowers. They are done now and soon to embark on their life outside.

Don't forget your meconopsis granma. I will be sowing them in October in an outside propagator just to see what happens.

I sow stuff in May as it's not really warm enough here to do much in April, unless they're undercover.
Some of them might not be viable if they're that old, but it's worth a try if you have the energy and inclination! It largely depends what they are as well.

hello granma, long time, I would have a go, dont know if the seeds will be viable though, most seem to have a "use by" of about 2 years, nothing ventured, and all that.  I get a lot of freebies with Gardners Weekly, some I dont like particularly, so I just rake over and chuck them on.

You could sow them in the top of a pot that has something else growing in it.  If they germinate, scoop them out and pot them on, if they don't, you've lost little time and no space.

Thanks , here's an update I sowed fifty of the packets ,around three quarters germinated and fifteen pots had the least  out of those   with less than ten to a pot .the rest  very satisfactory.thing is I didn't have much hope of them doing anything at all. I've  to find somewhere to put them now !!!!
I put some in other pots as Joshua suggested
Out of those the postwere already
