Buying Garden sheds: Why are sheds smaller than advertised?

Hi
I bought a 7’ x 5’ shed from a well know high street retailer, to replace our 30 year old 7’ x 5’ shed. The shed we got was well constructed shiplap sides with proper toungue and groove floor. Window was flimsy plastic but will replace that with glass at later stage.

However when I laid the floor it was a good 5 inches smaller than the existing shed floor in length and width. So the internal size is not 7 feet by 5 feet, it’s only 6.7’ x 4’7’. How can they be advertising a shed as 7 feet by 5 feet but fail to mention the interior is 5 inches smaller?

My old shed was bought as a 7’ x 5’ shed and had that internal measurement.

I know they will claim that because of the roof overhang it does measure 7’ by 5’ But you don't buy a shed based on the size of the roof.

Anyone else noticed this when buying sheds?

To mountainranger: i assume the the manufacturers are measuring exterior dimensions, rather than interior floorspace  is to ensure that it fits in the space the customer has available.

Blue onion, i have noticed this too with mother gooses' posts. I thought maybe they were banned (contentious posts ????) but don't know why the name still appears. 😕

Re Mother Goose ... I've alerted the Mods in case there's a glitch.

I would certainly expect shed measurements to be the external measurements, not internal. The measurement should be taken over the extreme edges, including any roof overhang.   I'd be extremely unhappy if I had a shed delivered which was too large to fit the intended space.

Hi Mountainranger, just a thought ? - maybe difference in unit of measurement - you in feet and inches - they the supplier in metric as all material now only supplied that way
