What are we?

Killers or nurturers?
I remember someone commenting about my love of gardening and the word 'nurturer' was mentioned.
This started me thinking: am I a nurturer or a killer?
Ok I grow a lot of plants but, I deliberately kill a lot of plants and beasties that I consider to be pests too.
What do you think?

    Surely most gardeners are both.

Definately murderer to the extent of being called "seral killer", but with the nurturing instinct to protect what we like, so big hearted too.

I do enjoy hoiking plants out, hard pruning, pulling out trees, whacking hedges. But then I'm the same in the house - I love getting rid of stuff, clearing out, giving away. So satisfying to have a whole new space. Not so much about killing as pruning or giving away what doesn't fit. It hurts to take out a perfectly healthy plant that I don't want, but I do it more and more as I want to make my garden my own, now that I know more about what I have and who they are.

I try so hard, but it's so hard in the garden and in the house!

  • After a day of hard landscaping, sawing, hammering, painting, digging and raking I'm nurturing a sore back that's killing me. So a bit of both i'd say.

I like the idea that gardeners (and farmers) are custodians of the patch they look after. Once you start looking at it like that it can change your whole perspective on gardening.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
