Weed or plant?

I bought this plant/shrub in 2014 from a garden centre but I have lost my marker as to what it is. Neighbours have said it is a weed. Can anyone identify it please?

Btw, weeds are plants too. Some wouldn't want this in their garden. I'm growing it from seed. The 'weed' versus 'garden centre treasure' is a bit of a false dichotomy. It generally depends on your point of view.
