patio pots

Janie BJanie B Posts: 963
Sorry if this has already been asked and answered... I have a large (and heavy) patio pot which has irises and daffodils in it. Once the daffs have finally died down, could I leave the bulbs in situ and overplant cosmos (easy option), or should I take all the bulbs out and store them for next year (more of a faff) before planting summer flowers in it? TIA.

I plant bulbs in pots fairly deeply and have, in previous years, planted shallow rooted bedding plants on top.

If the bulbs were planted deep enough you can just plant bedding plants on top once their leaves have gone over - after they've fed the  bulbs for next year - so give the pots some fertiliser to help with that and then again when you plant the cosmos.

If you're impatient, feed anyway and plant your cosmos carefully between the bulb foliage then just pull away the dead bulb foliage when it goes brown.
