Plant identification

Hi All. I was wondering if anyone may be able to help identify this plant/tree. It was given to me last week because it had self seeded in some else's garden and they did not want it - but they did not know what it is either. Any help will be appreciated- thank you!!

Berberis? Does it have thorns?

No it doesn't have any thorns. I did initially think it was a Berberis too, but it has a very smooth stem.

first thought was some sort of prunus.

Thank you, I had a look for prunus and it could be prunus nigra or spinosa "purpurea". I will pot it up and see what it does, and if it makes it any clearer as to what it might be.
