Lavender Hidcote

Hi everyone,
Do you usually prune your lavenders in spring? I pruned mine right after flowering last year but wanted to give them another quick trim now so they stay nice and compact. Good or bad idea? Am I too late?

You risk pruning off flower buds before they mature so I'd wait and trim them the usual way - immediately after flowers go over or, if you're exposed to very cold winters, at the end of winter so the flower stalks protect the stems below.

In my Belgian garden - regularly -20C in winter - we did them after flowering finished.

I trimmed mine last year at this time  to get a better shape as it was very straggley and lost the 1st lot of flowers but it did flower later in the season
Life's tragedy is that we get old too soon and wise too late.

Bit late now. I trim mine very lightly when they've finished flowering and then give them another going over in about March.
  • Thanks very much, I think I will leave the trimming for later then  :)
  • Hi aureliecelerier, how did things plan out with the lavender ?

Now is a great time to prune to keep them in shape and not getting leggy before winter comes.
