Aquilegias

Can anyone confirm that the first picture is an Aquilegia Granny's Bonnet and what are the second & third Aquilegia plants called? Thanks

  • Granny’s bonnet is the common name for any aquilegia so not a particular name for the first aquilegia.
Dont know the names of the others but very pretty, also aquilegia cross pollinate quite freely so you can land up with alsorts of combinations.

2nd one could possibly be " Red Winky" and the 3rd one a double called "Strawberry and Cream", but to be honest as Chrissy says they cross pollinate. I have some in my garden that l definitely didn't plant !

I had the lovely strawberries and cream one a while back from an offer in GW but as the time has gone on they are not the same and sadly not as lovely as strawberries and cream. They are nice but not as striking. I have more purply kinds popping up instead now. It's a shame they don't always stay true to the parents when they seed. Is there a way of making sure they come true each year?

Double (and more) seem to be more likely to come true. The Nor Barlow relatives that have up to twelve rows of petals are usually true. The pleated ones like the strawberry and cream are about 50/50 as to wether  they will come true or not.  It all depends on the bees.

Have a look at this thread for some more pics of aquilegias. Mine are not yet in flower this year.

I had an Aquilegia similar to your first picture. I had grown it from seed, called Yellow Queen. I grew it in a bed which I dug up to bury my lovely cat a couple of years back. I tried transplanting but was not too successful, although I am now seeing aquilegia seedlings reappearing.

As Chrissy says...Granny's bonnet is just an old name for all aquilegias.

Could be either Yellow Queen which is a chrysanthe hybrid or F1 Swan Yellow in the first image. The foliage is slightly different for the first in comparison to other Aquilegias

Thanks for all the comments - the first (yellow) was from a new packet of seed called Granny's Bonnet, the other two were seeds taken from established flowers - I love them all for their purity, but hope they don't revert to the common purple flower next year - we have enough of them growing rampantly in our garden already.
