I've never planted a Tree Peony, fidgetbones...unless it got there by accident.
The leaves are very similar though.
    Thankyou.

    Astrantia?

The only things i remember planting in the area are Echinacea and Gallardia, Lyn...and I don't think it's either of those, or Astrantia.
    Thanks.

Does look very peony-like.  Tree peonies do grow from seed (unless you want them to!) :)
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Well, that's a complete fluke, if it's a Tree Peony.
Does anyone know how deep the root on it is likely to be?
I may have to put it into a pot for the time being, whilst I make some arrangements for it. I cant leave it where it is...front of flower bed.

I dug the plant up, and sure enough the seed is like a black olive.
Looks like you were all correct. A Tree Peony.
    Thanks everyone.
