Mature clematis Montana wilting in patches

Hi all. I have a beautiful 10 year old clematis Montana growing along a fence. It's just coming into flower and I've been out to admire it this morning. Very upset to find that many stems of it are wilting and dying.
I've googled clematis wilt (which I'd never heard of) but there is no evidence of fungus on the plant or damage to stems. The only noticeable thing is slug/snail trails on the affected stems though none of the growth has been eaten?!
Very grateful for any help on this.

It's probably stem damage from the slugs/snails chomping on them. It could be lower down the plant, causing stems above to wilt.
I've had it happen on some of my clematis before.
Maybe check around the base of it for hidey holes where the culprits might be, under pots/stones etc.
Snails could be stuck on the fence behind the trellis.
I hunt them down and bin them.
  • Thanks Kitty2. I do regular slug hunts with other plants so will now include clematis ;)
