Like I said before. Patience. Maybe those upper nodes will grow leaves as spring goes on but if not you can just trim them off above a healthy leaf but wait till the end of June when the sap flow slows.

I’m not sure but it looks like the lower green shoots are growing from below the graft ( the knobbly bit ) so won’t be Paul’s Scarlet if this is the case you need to rub those off. I planted mine last year and it is in full leaf, now awaiting the lovely pink double flowers.
Oh that's good advice. I definitely wanted it to be a Paul's Scarlett so now you've mentioned that it makes sense. I will rub them off and hope for the best? I'm still awaiting a response from the company as they assured me it would grow by now but maybe it was the weather but it's sulking at the mo.
Picture not clear on my PC but if there is a graft and the leaves are below it then Chrissy's right and you need to favour growth above the union. If nothing happens by the end of June you need to write to Parkers - keep copies - and claim a refund. They have a fairly bad rep for client service so do keep copies of all correspondence.

I will do that. Thanks for the advice. It's hard taking photos outside with my phone as can't see what you're looking at on the screen when it's sunny. But it is below the graft. I'm off outside now to get those little leaves off!!
I bought a hawthorn tree: Paul's Scarlett, in the hope it would bring in more wildlife/birds and have pretty pink blossom. Unfortunately the source I got it from delivered a stick in Feb, about a metre tall. It did have some buds on it and i planted it. I can now see little green bits (what looks like leaves) at the base, soil level, but nothing else is happening. I have tried contacting the supplier with my complaint and disappointment and wanted to ask for a refund as they said I had a guarantee on it if i wasn't happy, but they refuse to reply (JParkers): I have since heard bad reviews about JP and also read on the forum that hawthorn trees can take about 8 years just to establish and flower!
I emailed JParkers again and have got a speedy reply. I pointed out that their website, photos and information is misleading and the customer service is not acceptable. They have offered to refund me the tree so let's see how quickly that happens and IF it actually happens. Anyway, I just thought it was progress after hearing others have had problems with customer service and refunds. There is hope still in this crazy world!!🤞
