Weed suppression advice, please

RallotRallot Posts: 18
I recently took over an allotment plot, which absolutely teeming with weeds - horsetail, couch grass and much more. I've been working my through it but I've come to realise that I can't possibly dig it all over in this growing season. It's been suggested that I simply cover half of it up to prevent the situation getting worse.
Any suggestions as to what I should use, please? Should the cover be permeable or impermeable?
Weedkiller has also been suggested, which took me by surprise?!
Thanks for any advice.

  • I’ve not tried it myself but, when I used to have an allotment, a lot of the other plotters used old carpet with good results. We’re about to recarpet our entire house so will have loads of the stuff if you’re anywhere near East Devon!  :D

I hadn't thought of that, thanks for the tip. I'd need to check - they're rather particular about the appearance of plots on the site (though nothing I lay could look worse than the weeds at the moment!)
And thanks for the kind offer...but I'm in Manchester!

Some thick layers of overlapping cardboard covered in wood chips or manure?  Get which every you can get your hands on for free.  The covered cardboard will look nice with something spread across it, and blocking out the sunlight will kill off most of the weeds, and make the others a bit easier to deal with.
