Look what I made!!!!!

Does anyone remember a Gardeners World from 2015 (episode 16) with a guy from Hebden Bridge who runs an alpine nursery. In his segment he described a way of making an alpine trough using a bag of concrete and a couple of big buckets as moulds.

Well...my bank holiday weekend project was to try this..and this is the result.

It hasn't aged yet (no lichen growing on it) but it worked!

Painting it with yoghurt is supposed to help with aging/weathering.

Looks great! It has to be Live yoghurt to encourage the lichen btw, otherwise you are literally just painting it with yoghurt
  • Thanks Dove - I'll try that. Only got blueberry flavour in my fridge - may need a trip to the supermarket.

I've seen people on TV mix up the yogurt with handfuls of moss and buttermilk(?) in a food processor and paint it on then.

  • Looks great. I tried making a few concrete pots a couple of years ago but none as good as yours! I’ve done wooden containers this year instead as I found easier to make!

    Looks great, well done 👍.
I've seen the moss in a blender method Blue Onion mentioned on TV too. Put me right off smoothies 😳.
You could try mashing it up in a bucket instead, I think they added a little garden soil to the mix ?

My trough is now covered in yoghurt. My neighbour caught me with a paint brush and yoghurt carton in hand. My answer to his question 'what are you doing with that yoghurt?' was 'encouraging lichen!'. He already thinks I'm mad and all I seem to do is reinforce his perception. I live in West Yorkshire; men don't tend to paint yoghurt on their alpine troughs round these parts.
