John Innes seed compost

  • Thank you everyone for responding to my post. I don’t think I will buy the JI seed compost again. I really enjoy growing my stuff from seed but I think it may be too late to sow more toms this year and may just buy a few plants instead. I’ve pricked a lot of my flower seedlings out into MPC even though they were very small but they have already put on a lot of growth - especially with the nice bank hol we’ve just had  :)

I believe the idea of using a seed compost is deliberately keeping nutrients low, such that the roots grow stronger without as much top growth....particularly useful if you're seeding individual cells, as we all know pulling a cell out which is full of roots is a lot easier than pricking out.

i would never do seeds again without a strong proportion of vermiculite, it gives more air, stops drying out.  it's a win win.

i've used JI seed last year it was good/did what you want...plenty of sand/free draining.   i used Aldi's own this year it was rubbish by contrast.

  • Thank you ‘Up North’ - I think that would have improved the JI seed compost I had. But I don’t see the point of JI making a ‘seed’ compost if it has to be altered by vermiculite or sand etc? Surely it should be ready to be sown straight into if it is marketed as ‘seed’ compost?
