    They can get very leggy, with long straggly branches shooting away from the rest of the bush. At least mine did ... have two more (babies) to try in our new garden as their colour is great.

    Visited Beth Chatto's garden many years ago and she coppiced them so had new young shoots each year. they looked lovely.

    I read about doing this to them Loraine3 and I might try that. As you can see Papi Jo the one I have is very leggy and seems to be going here there and everywhere. It is staying in the garden though, I just love the colour but it will be taught not to be so unruly in the future. Thank you everyone for your very helpful comments, greatly appreciated.:)

    Habit = shape or form.  Cotinus can be uneven,untidy and ragged looking, especially after a hard winter kills off some branches.
