Frost damaged clematis

I have a couple of clematis that were damaged by the "Beast from the east" and its sibling.

Buds were coming out at the time of the first bout of cold weather, and then I think they had just managed to recover a bit when they were hit again. Now there is no sign of new growth, its nearly the middle of May and near by clematis in my garden are getting on with things.

One of them was a few years old with a spread of 8 feet, the other was a couple of years old at best. Having cut through one or two stems, some still appear to be green in the middle, but there are soooo many dead buds and not a sign of fresh growth even from ground level.

I don;t know the varieties - at least one of them is a one that would normally be in flower now.

When do I call it a day with them and dig them out? Or is there anything I can do to nurture them back into life?

Don't dig them out.  I've known clematis reappear from the dead after 2 or even 3 years.   Cut back the dead growth down to any possible buds and give them a liquid feed of tomato food as a tonic.  Give them a feed of slow release clematis, rose or tomato food and then be patient.  If the roots are OK they will re-shoot in their own good time.
