Ideas for non-toxic screening plants?

Hello!,
I am a complete gardening novice and would like some advice!. I would like to plant some screening shrubs/bushes/small trees in front of a fence to help obscure the view and make my garden feel secluded. However, I have 2 small children and a cat so would like the screening plants to be non-toxic. Evergreen would be good too. Does anyone have any ideas of what I could plant?
