Funny how us humans with all our intelligence struggle to create something so precisely designed yet a little insect can do it so easily  :)
    Indeed!  :)
I often used to sit and watch them 'harvest' wood from the fence in a previous garden, making it into pulp for a nest. The noise was quite loud and it took me a while to find what it was.   :)
I once spent more time than I'll care to admit trying to get a photo of a wasp doing this. They move so fast as they scrape away at the wood though it's almost impossible.

If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
  • Actually wasps are far more reasonable than bees. Every year the wasps nest somewhere near my pond filter sump.

The first time i was worried but i said to them (out loud) "Listen lads, we both need to be here. If you let me do my thing without getting all waspy. Then i will leave you to do yours. Ok? But if just one of you stings me, then i'll come looking for all of you. Deal?"

    None of them replied.

So i said "That's how it's gonna be".

And none of them stung me.

The following year they were back. On one occasion i was out there with only boxer shorts on and they had to fly between my legs to get where they wanted to go. I had no concerns at all..

I tried the same thing with a bees nest in the shed but they were having none of it. They all just swarmed toward me and i had to beat a hasty retreat. I didn't wipe them out. I just stopped going into the shed.

  • She's still busy working away. I can see grubs in the honeycomb section now. She doesn't seem to be bothered by my presence in the slightest .

Also I discovered she's getting in and out through a tiny gap between the roof and wall just by the nest..so I'm not so scared opening the shed door. For now 🤔
