White beam trunk damage
The trunk of my Whitebeam has a cavity which oozed black until recently. We don’t know what caused this but should we treat it? Or cover it to prevent further damage?

Don't cover the area or try to dress it with some type of seal. It may accelerate the issue. In the meantime, check the tree is growing in optimum conditions. If the ground is compacted and regularly waterlogged, look into changing the soil conditions surrounding the tree.
