Acer palmatum soil needs.

madpenguinmadpenguin Posts: 2,543
Have just bought a lovely Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum' from Morrissons for the princely sum of £3.
It is going in a pot but I don't have any ericaceous compost right now.Would John Innes No.3 be OK.I can get some in the next few days but wondered if I really need to go to that trouble!!!

The little cog on the right of your post. A dropdown menu will give you the edit options. On a phone it might be different.

It will last in a large  pot/container for a few years, but then you'll have to plant it out. Men have never had efficacious compost and the ones in the ground are in clay.
The main problem when it gets to about 3ft in a pot, is keeping it watered. Twice a day sometimes.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

As I do bonsai I know that acers and other trees can be kept in a pot can be kept in a pot for years with root pruning etc. so that is not a problem for me.(I have a 30 year old English Elm)
It was just me wondering if I could 'get away' with using John Innes No.3.Shall pot it up later without another trip to the garden centre!!!
