Steep bit of land - what would you do?!

Steep bit of land right at the end of the garden. The land is about 3 metres by 6 metres. The garden slopes so the left hand side is high up...you can see the steps leading up to the fire pile

    Ooh the potential!!

What are you wanting to do? Grow veg? Have flower beds? Something wildlife friendly and little maintenance?

All are possible on that patch. Some ideas might take a bit of work (like creating raised beds that step up the slope), but if you're prepared to put the effort in...

I'd do nothing and call it the wild life patch! Unless you really need the space for something if you have a small garden, it looks like it will take a lot of hard work and lots of money to turn it into a garden - the slope will always be a problem.

What do you 'need' in your garden that you don't have elsewhere?  Do you need a space for veg, or want something with minimal maintenance that fills the space with evergreen color?
I 'need' a cut flower patch.. so I would make terraces using the existing soil and a bit of topdressing, planted up with a variety of flowers for cutting and making displays in the house throughout the spring, summer, and fall.   :)

  • Thank you for your replies. I have a formal garden and a greenhouse with raised beds...I like the idea of a cut flowers garden...would I just need to dig it all out and put seed down?

Yes Freddies Dad, but I garden on a slope and it has been hard work and has cost a lot of money overall. Depends on how much energy you've got and how fit you are I suppose.

I’d watch Big Dreams, Small Spaces episode 1 on Netflix
