I have a salvia bot lips and I cut it back every spring and it goes on to flower beautifully. I live in the south and it survives the Winter well here. I have had it for several years, purchased it from the Eden Project in Cornwall. Lovely plant.

  • Hi there, thanks for your message. Oh we went to the Eden project last summer, it’s fab isn’t it! When you say cut it back do you mean right down to the base of the plant? Thanks
  • Nanny Beach I think you’ve answered a question for me! I cut back my Hotlips last year and this year when it flowered the flowers were all white! Royal Bumble has been glorious though!
  • I think I cut mine back too early last year, as it didn't survive the winter. I promptly bought two more thougg. Fab plant, always full of bees!

Mine changes colour with the temperature it seems.  I like it when it's nearly all red or, as now - high 20sC, all white but it looks cheap and common when it's red and white.  Matter of taste of course but thank goodness we get warm enough long enough for the mostly white.

Mine is pure white. Cheap and common what made you purchase it then! Last year I bought all the "lips".mine is in heavy clay soil and part sun, seems happy enough

I've never seen the attraction of it.  Horrible colour combination IMO, but lots seem to like it. If it was one thing or the other it would be better   :)
Just as well it probably wouldn't survive here  ;)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Then it wouldn't have to lips though

I still like it, but prefer Royal Bumble. I have begun swapping HLs out for RB in my salvia hedge. My HPs has been all white this year and was all red last year. I like how it changes.  It only might look "common" because everybody grows it. Nothing wrong with that.
