What's killed my clematis montana

Bobby SprayBobby Spray Posts: 21
I wondered why  my three year old clematis montana (white) had not yet come to leaf. On closer inspection it seems to be completely dead. There is an orange slime at the bottom of the plant where it comes out of the ground and a few weeping sores further up. Can anyone tell me what killed it and also can I immediately replant another clematis in the same location?

OMG I have never seen anything like that before.  I know that doesn't help but I'll be very interested to know what the experts on here say.  It's not clematis wilt.  Could any chemicals have been spilt on it?  Weedkiller wouldn't normally cause oozing orange pus but have you had builders in or anything like that?

Does your slime smell foul? (Not a question I thought I would be asking today).

I wouldnt replant in the same area. I would remove a lot of the soil there and replace it. There might be a treatment to kill off any infection left in the area and then replant with something else for a few years and then maybe try another clematis.

Thanks for all the assistance, Iv'e dug up the montana which was dead, removed  a couple of buckets of soil and replaced with well rotted manure. A Mrs bateman now sits in the place of the Montana.
