I meantime to say, Jellyfire, that your construction method is brilliantly simple and effective - and quick. I'd been humming and harring (haring?) about doing this for about 2years! Hence my enthusiasm once I'd finished. I really admire people who can do things quickly the simple way.

Thanks Birdy - I saw that [ the gears] when I had a look at it online. There's also one a few quid dearer which has a hammer function, but it's a much longer charge. I have a corded hammer drill, so I might stick with the one you've got, and when I need to do any masonry stuff, I have the leccy one.
I've had lots of Bosch tools over the years, and this is the first one that's been rubbish. The batteries don't hold the charge at all. Very disappointing  :/
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Yes Nanny, thank you. Just couldn't think of the spelling, possibly never written it before.

Fairy Girl - it's strange that I never noticed the drill didn't have a hammer function when I bought it. Just as well, I expect, as I would now still be vacillating over choosing best value for money and the timber would still be at the timber yard.  :)

Picidae since your earlier post I'm thinking of getting a soil thermometer. Any recommendations?
