    If it’s coming through from next door you can dig a trench alongside and put compost sacks or some plastic down, the roots are quite shallow so won’t get through.
    not sure about it liking certain soil, comes up here in soft or solid soil, I just track it along, it’s usually  about 1’ long roots, sometimes longer, secret is not to break it.

    @Lyn It's a good idea, but in my case the area is not very accessible, bordering a shed and a  log storage, stony in parts, and has shrub and tree roots as well - quite difficult to dig a trench. I've traced the ground elder roots all the way back to the fence. I agree it grows in different types of soil, but the disturbance theory makes some sense to me, perhaps it's just that progress is quicker in such soil.
