Pruning Forsythia

I was watching Alan Titchmarsh's Love Your Garden last night, and Frances Tophill said to prune your forsythia to the ground after flowering.  I know you're supposed to prune out the 1/3rd of the oldest branches at the base.. but the idea of cutting it all back is appealing, as I did the classic newbie and planted mine in a too-small-for-sprawling-habit space.  Has anyone tried cutting it all back before?  What were your results?

I have done it in order to rejuvenate it.  It was two years before it had any flowers.

Thanks Joyce.. that was what I was worried about.  I'll have to have a think about it.. either let it just do it's thing (it's currently half under a cherry tree).. or battle it's nature.
