Looks like a rhododendron or azalea.

    Sorry to disagree.
It is not Rhododendron.... leaf margins look toothed
    Buds not right for Rhodo
I believe it may be Rhaphiolepsis indica.

It is not a Rhode and is not Eucalyptus.
Sadly I do not know what it is.

Hi - thanks for all the ideas.  I'll try and take some more photos later on.  It's a mystery plant that I have in a pot (long story!) they are all in bad condition and i need to plant them to grow back to a good state.  They only problem is that I need to find out what they are first so I can find the right spot to plant them...

I have a large azalea quite similar, wait until it flowers, we can tell better then.

Sorry but leaves are not right for Azalea. Note the serrated leaf margins..in Qwerty7 pic.
Azaleas actually come botanically under Rhododendron.

    All Azalea are Rhododendron.
But not all Rhododendrons are Azaleas.
It depends on the number of stamen

It will be interesting to see the flowers on this shrub. I have only seen Rhaphiolepsis Indica once, in a garden centre, and I thought it was a Rhododendron too. It's not a really hardy plant so could explain its tatty appearance.
