Tree or shrub suitable to screen.

hi, I want a tree or shrub to screen a gap at the bottom of the garden. I have raised beds in front so nothing that will be too wide. I was thinking of a bare stem with a lolipop type top, but my knowledge dosen’t extend to knowing what would be suitable. I’d also like it to be everygreen,  with the screen above my 5’ fence. Any ideas? Thanks

The gap is about 6 foot wide. Our garden is about 84 feet long. But I don’t want anything too wide because of the raised beds in front.

Oh thanks I’ll have a look at them.
  • standard ligustrum would be good, you can prune to keep in shape and there is a lovely variegated one.  Also a standard Portuguese laurel would be very dense and again easy to keep in shape.  Both evergreen.

How about a standard holly tree, slow-gowing, evergreen, and some have lovely red berries on them. You can also get holly with variegated leaves if you prefer.

Both my bay trees died in the severe winter we have just had.

GW a few weeks ago showed Monty's standard bay trees - they were very badly affected by frost / cold winds / winter wet / any or all of those. They were completely brown and crispy. I wouldn't use them in the location the OP is selecting as they could be prone to wind damage unless they are going to be kept below the level of the top of the fence.

I thought they were intended to be above the top of the fence but maybe I've misunderstood....

Yes I do want something to screen above the fence, with 1 stem below ideally.
