Plant suggestions
Hi,
I'm trying to find a plant to use as an alternative to trellis to provide some privacy on our patio which is raised and therefore visible from the street and our neighbours. I'm considering an amelanchier but have seen some images of them getting very big and bushy and I wondered how easy they are to prune and shape to keep them medium size and also not block too much light. The garden is medium size so I need to keep a plant small to medium sized, the patio is in full sun with clay soil and not fully sheltered so unfortunately acers are not suitable. Any advice on amelanchier or any alternative plant suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Shellsharm, if you're considering Amelanchier have you considered the Malus or Prunus varieties. I'm looking at those at the moment and you can certainly get ones that don't get too tall and they'll love the sun.
I would suggested either a passion flower or a chocolate vine.
Both provide good coverage without blocking light and are great for wildlife not to mention having lovely flowers and foliage
Does the final tree / shrub need to provide screening all the way to the base or would something that has more of a small tree-like canopy work?
Does the screening need to be evergreen for year round privacy or are you more worried about summer screening?
Is there a reason why a trellis or other form of 'hard' barrier cannot be considered?
And the tag..
