You didn't say what the £7k quote entailed. Personally it doesn't look so bad to my eye and if it's had trees growing around there for a while it can't be the worst soil. I would clear the rubble, spike the whole lawn with a fork and rake in some sand or similar to improve the drainage, then maybe add a thin layer of top soil, rake level and seed it. If it was grass before it can't be too bad. Dig a hole a spade's width wide and deep and take a photo so we can see how it looks below the surface.
I laid my lawn in a hurry for a mortgage assessment after we built the house. The ground was hard compacted stoney clay with no topsoil as I'd completely regraded it. I added an inch of mulch and rolled turf over it with the intention of taking it back up afterwards. 8 years later I still haven't got around to replacing it and it's fine. It's a bit wet in winter but nothing too bad. Grass is tough stuff and if you pick your seed carefully it will deal with the ground you have.
Don't get farmyard manure in though as it will likely be full of weed seeds.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
Thank you all for your help but everyone saying different things. Does anyone know of any workers in Manchester than can assist. Want the kids to enjoy the summer in the garden. HELP!

Well we're working with very little information I'm afraid. If you've had 3 quotes surely they've given you a breakdown of what the work they're proposing would entail?

They have and they are all saying different things! I am wanting someone honest to say how it is rather than tell me stories! where is the decent worker today?
They're probably busy laying lawns for £7k a time. You're not going to get amazing advice for free on internet forums based on one photo and a brief description.
