clematis planting - no woody stems yet

  • I often grow on clematis plug plants until they have grown too big for 3 pots from 7cm up to 14 cm - so the plants are roughly 10 inches tall and quite bushy rather than just having one stem when I plant them into the garden.  Personally I wouldn't plant out anything smaller - the slugs here would devour anything too weak.  Do keep a good lookout for the plant that goes into your border Amanda.     I was told to treat clematis plants from the supermarket as cuttings, and I do. They are fine if they get the first year in a pot.

    I wish someone would tell my slugs and snails that they're not supposed to like clematis, I swear they eat everything.  :s

    Slugs love them - all those juicy little new shoots....

    Unfortunately, people are often told to put slate/pieces of flowerpot etc round the base to 'keep the roots cool' which is quite misleading, and it simply provides a lovely little home for all those molluscs.
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
