Shrub or small tree on steep mound?

Hi,

Its complicated to explain but imagine a mound of earth about 1.5m high and 3m across. It’s about a 45 degree slope.

I want to stick a tree on top of it but I’m scared that it might want to send out roots horizontally and there isn’t any soil there.

Will it be fine or are there certain features that I need to look for in any plant I stick there?

Thanks

I don't know, but I imagine a few things might help - looking for trees with a habit of sending down deep roots (and a taproot), rather than wide and shallow. Digging a really deep hole in the middle of mound and filling it with good, nutritious soil / conditioning would encourage roots to go down (easy root run) rather than out. I imagine a dwarf tree would be more likely to fit - dwarf crab apple or acer? (Just an idea)
