Any Acer experts re: Acer Katsura?

I have a large 5ft Acer Katsura in a pot purchased few months ago. It looked healthy but has very thin long stems. It starting budding up in spring and the leaves started to emerge. However, the leaves are growing but have been stuck at this stage (see photo) for over 2 weeks and seem extremely small for such a large plant. The soil has always remained moist and it was fed with a liquid seaweed fertiliser a few weeks ago.

Is this the normal habit for this plant? What am I doing wrong?  I plan to repot in a larger pot with “Jacks Magic” compost as soon as the weather improves.

Has it been caught by the frost or the wind at all?

Thanks for your reply @pbff. It’s been out in the snow all winter and it was moved to the south facing wall a few weeks ago.

Not sure it should be on a south facing wall. Most acers enjoy a bit of partial shade. How large is your plant? It could be just a bit slow with the changeable weather we have been having. My acers have not unfurled their leaves yet. Give it a bit of time yet.

Sorry @Hogweed I meant to write “west” facing wall! Getting my south and west mixed up  :p It’s 5 ft tall and in partial shade. Thanks for your reply, I’ll see what happens in the coming weeks.

Well my Acer didn’t show any signs of improvement and looked worse with some leaves turning black at the edges. I thought best to repot this with fresh compost and to my horror I found about 20 Vine weevil grubs!!

I stripped the acer bare of all its soil, washed the root ball and repotted, hoping it survives the trauma now  :'(
