Question.Lawn levelling

I want to level the low spots in my lawn. Most of them are maybe 1" deep, so I'm going to try dressing with 50/50 sand/composted soil over the whole area. What type of sand do I use? Building, grit or river sand. I'm leaning towards building sand.

If I was doing a big area I'd go for a sharp sand ("grit"?) as it might have marginally better drainage.

DGM thanks, I have used grit sand in the past, it could be best to stick with grit.  :)

Rather than top dress you could fill from underneath thus maintain the existing grass. Cut an 'X' with a sharp spade or edger then slip the spade underneath, peel back, fill with top soil and reinstate. Instant job.

There are so many, and my knees and ankles are knack'd. I have trouble. I noticed the bumps more when I had to get a riding mower cause I can't keep up with my walk behind. I might even fashion a drag mat to make it easier. :|

We do this in churchyards to level graves, we just put soil/compost over the low places and sprinkle seeds.
