I started a variety of tomato seeds in March, however I’m unsure how my San Marzano is growing. This is supposed to be an indeterminate tomato as with others which are growing well.
Please does anyone know why it’s growing like this and what I need to do?
They appear to have gone blind.I am assuming you haven't pinched them out. It should have a strong stem with leaves coming off it. Have you any more plants or seed to grow some more?
No I did not pinch them abs I still have some seeds left. I’m worried if I start a new set now; I won’t get much fruit from it or they may not ripe in time. I grow my tomato plants outside.
Well, what have you to lose. I'm not an expert, but how about pinching out the side shoots and planting rest of seeds. That way youllyget some tomotes?
All my seedlings get fed with comfrey tea, same as last season. The others are doing well just San Marzano. I will sow new seeds today and try pinching out one of the blind seedlings. Fingers cross, I get some tomato from either.
Let us know. I have the same variety and they don't look that different. I bought one of these multipack of tomato seeds with six varieties in one pack. I now have 50+ plants squashed on the window sills. I have no idea where to plant them later!! I didn't expect that many to germinate.
You can use side shoots as cuttings & make new plants I know you said you had a lot of seed but if you do that it would be quicker than starting again from seed, & maybe this time you can get just one central stem.
I chop them back to wherever I want them to be. My San Marzano are going to be bush types under a cloche, whether they like it or not. No good pretending we're on the slopes of Mt.Vesuvius. I think with this April weather, we're probably snookered for this year anyway.
