I m looking for low maintenance iris growing ideas

Can anyone come up with another idea for iris growing please.I have for a long time grown bearded iris in a separate bed . It's hard to weed out at times .like now it's full of grass even though it was all done September'.
It's been suggested that I gravel then grow in troughs. I'm not sure this would work though
Are there anymore ideas out there please?
