Am I clutching at straws?

Hello all.  Once again I need your expert help.  Attached is a sorry picture of my hydrangea.  There is some thing growing,  but I don't know if its part of the plant or just something else.

I can't see any new growth from the cut back branches, unfortunately.   Any thoughts?

The new growth, is not Hydrangea.
It looks pretty dead to me, sorry.

I figured so, but was still hoping .  Thanks for your help as always.  I'll keep an eye on the green and see what happens

They are heavy drinkers so need a lot of watering, potentially daily in the summer, esp in a smallish pot.

I must admit I didn't look after it as well as I should.  It's a shame I got it from the bargain bin and it did ok until the winter came.

SonnieB, why has the hydrangea been cut hard back?

SonnieB, Mophead and lacecap hydrangeas flower on the previous year's growth. Leave dead flower heads on until late March/.April then cut back to healthy leaf buds.
Hopefully you will see new green leaves, appearing from the bottom, soon but you wont get flowers this year.
