Tree Roots in Sloping garden

We've just moved house to a lovely spot with a large sloping garden, boundaried by a dry stone wall. There are 3 trees, very mature with huge roots and a further stump with large roots still prevalent. Garden has covered with grass but I want to plant some colour. Can anyone recommend the best way without overly damaging the trees? Thanks

    Plant small versions of whatever you want to grow?  That way you'll only need to dig in a small hole.  For example, rather than buying a large perennial in a 2L pot, go for the same variety in the 9cm pot.

    Check it often and water as necessary, especially as the plants establish.  Trees can suck the water from the soil pretty quick, and the leaves can keep a light rain from reaching plants below.

    There is no need to plant them that small - 2 litre plants will be fine. Try and avoid planting directly under the trees if that is possible, gently dig around between any roots, dig your planting hole, removing the soil and replacing it with J.Innes No.3, with some blood, fish and bone added. Water the hole well, then plant and keep it well watered for the first year.
