What could be boring into this tree?

Hello-I think this problem has come up before but I couldn’t find the thread-wish I’d paid attention now! It looks as though something is boring a hole at the base of one of my trees:

There is a small pile of shavings On the ground. I noticed it last year too but hoped it would go away. Does anyone know what it could be?

thanks

What kind of tree is it?  Borers tend to be specific and each species go for just a few types of tree.  If you search the forum for 'borer', there are a few threads which may help. :)

  • Thanks bob the gardener-afraid I don’t know what the tree is, it has unremarkable foliage and some catkin-type things just coming out:
Will give the forum a search...

Looks like a willow, so maybe this?

  • Yikes! Ok, not sure there’s much I can do as it seems to be happening right at the base.  It’s a large tree so hopefully it can handle a bit of bore-ing!

Yep, I also wouldn't worry on a large tree.  :)  It's when it happens to young one that the damage can be significant.
