Cactus identification
I bought the cactus below in a garden centre and was wondering whether anyone could help with identifying which species it is. The label says Trichocereus but I was hoping to get a more specific identification so that I could find out about its tolerance to cold. I want to keep it an unheated conservatory. A Echinocactus Grusonii has been thriving in the conservatory for 10 years or so.
I have attached 2 photos – one a view from the top where the 8 lines of thorns can be seen. For an idea of scale the cactus (excluding the pot) is 12 ins tall.
Thanks a lot
Dave

Echinopsis (Trichocereus) bridgesii fits the bill .
You can't ID a cactus by the number of lines (ribs) , as they will increase as the plant grows , and the spination should get stronger .
Sorry to be negative here , but don't expect flowers on your E.grusonii !
It has never been known to flower in N.Europe; nothing you've done , just the light intensity and daylength isn't enough .
thanks for your post. Having gone through the process suggested by Wild Edges my best guess was a Bridgessi which is also your thoughts so I think I will stick with that. I am happy now that it will be OK in the conservatory during the winter
Many thanks to everyone for your helpline
