Bee balm - what on earth is it doing?

Rose121Rose121 Posts: 132
Last year I had some lovely bee balm / monarda. I've been watching out for it to return this year, and thought it was dead. But there are 'rooty' sort of patches where it was that look like they might be doing somthing. Yesterday I spotted a few leaves that look like it might be signs of a revival - but they're a good 10-15cm outside these rooty patches.
Does it spread in a ring? Is there going to be a bald patch in the middle? Advice appreciated!

    Hi Rose

I have Monarda Cambridge Scarlet. It's is a very vigorous grower if in the right aspect. These were brought in 1 litre pots and the growth rate this year has trebled from the original growth that it was in the pots.
I have no real idea why you are not getting growth appearing from the centre of the plant as my Cambridge Scarlet have grown from the centre of the root ball and outwards
Do you know what type of Monarda it is although as a species I would suggest they all grow from the ground basically the same way

Hi Rose, my friend planted Monarda in 2016, in 2017 she had a small amount in the same place but loads in the surrounding area.  Apparently it spreads if happy.

Mine seems to like going off and exploring other parts of the garden from where it was planted. This means I don't get a clump but bits here and there.
