Moving plants to our new house

Hi all

Its been a while, had an awful lot going on. The end result being we will be moving home shortly. Our new house will be much larger - but sadly the compromise is that I'll be losing my large garden. Our new space will be about 9x8 metres in the back - though I'll have a fair chunk to play with out front, too. And we'll inherit a couple of incredibly beautiful conifers!

Anyway, to the point (sorry). I want to take some of my more cherished plants with us. None of them are particularly mature. They are all about 2 to 2.5 years old. One or two maybe just a year. But I am concerned about how well they will cope with a move. And I wondered if there was any advice for some that I should leave - and how best to go about the move!
The plants I want to take are as follows:

  • Parrotia Persica 'Persian Spire'
  • Two Hellebores (one is approx .75m in width right now)
  • A brunnera
  • Pittosporum 'Garnetti' and 'Tom Thumb'
  • 2 x Salvia nemorosa Caradonna
  • Abelia grandiflora 'Kaleidoscope'
  • Peony - 'Karl Rosenfeld'
  • Callicarpa 'Profusion'
  • Viburnum x bodnatense 'Dawn'
Many thanks for any help

Claire

There is some interesting discussion of plant moving here.

Just remember that you cannot take plants with you unless you have specifically excluded them from the sale. Plants growing in the soil are counted as part of the property.

First of all have you told your buyers that you will be taking these plants because technically they belong to the garden which belongs to the house and so on.

Assuming that's OK you need to dig them up and pot them and keep them watered and fed until you're able to plant them out again.    Water well and leave to soak before you dig them up as this minimises root disturbance.   You may want to remove all flowers and flower buds to reduce stress on the plants while they're recovering.

  • I will take a look at the link, thank you

Thats right Berghill, I will say we will be taking a few. Rather more courteous than the previous owners of our current home were - they took almost all the plants
