Hi All, I’ve recently had a rather large privet hedge removed from my very small front garden. I now have much more room and have two large ish beds to fill (picture attached). What shrubs/plants would you plant here to make the garden look beautiful, and perhaps smell lovely too. It really is a blank canvas
It maybe small but it is already really lovely 😍 I would fill with herbs and lavenders and plant out quite formally in rows and pop in edible annuals like marigolds, violas and nastertiums
Hi everyone, thanks for the comments, it did look nice last summer (only lived in the house a year) but everything was over powered by the massive hedge. Yes, there are LOADS of cats in the area. Thanks for the advice. It’s east facing, and it’s a Victorian terrace so I was thinking roses, geraniums, delphiniums, maybe peonies too, lavendar and Rosemary?!
What's the pH? If it's the acid side of neutral, you could plant azalea luteum, sometimes called rhododendron luteum, which has yellow flowers that smell like old fashioned carnations. And for winter colour and fragrance, hamamelis aka witch hazel, which also likes acid soil.
Than you. I’ll test the pH of the soil. Are there any small trees (max height 5 feet) that would give some height or something that would grow over the wall? Could a clematis climb on short wall?
You can get lower growing clematis, a look on a site such as Thorncroft will give you some ideas. Personally, l wouldn't have a tree, l think it would take over. You could use obelisks, maybe one on each side as a matching pair, if you wanted some height.
