It doesn't look 45 years old, for sure... more like a five year old Pinterest project gone wrong.

It has a purpose though.. that is an expensive amount of concrete for 'nothing'.
The paint is fairly fresh but there's no reason to assume it's not that old. I just can't believe the previous owner just accepted it for 45 years without knowing what it was. Especially if she gave it a lick of paint now and then to keep it looking nice.

It looks like a cast of a 55gallon plastic barrel.. I suppose perhaps they did have those back in the 70's.  The metal pipe looks like the hose attachment for a rain barrel.. like someone cast it in cement then turned it upside down.

And you could (sort of) understand that as a rather, er, sturdy rain barrel experiment but why the air brick? And why is it now upside down? Unless they made it for a rain barrel, realised it was far too heavy to move to where they wanted it, saw a vent that needed a cover and thought "aha! I'll turn the concrete barrel over it and cut a hole in the side" ? As you do

Oh, I don't know. It's has its own permaculture, diy, charm. You would probably pay a lot these days for a "shabby chic home-smoker with a contemporary, mid-century, urban-rural feel". James you could brand it is a new Sarah Raven garden must-have, homage to Rachel Whiteread, put in on Ebay and see how much you could get. I bet it would surprise you. Especially if it's all hollow and you could use it as a planter (turned upside down) or a very committed rhubarb forcer.
