I recently bought a read-made cherry tree with graft only 2"-3" above the soil, and I have just seen what appears to be a cluster of rootlets emerging mid-air not far from the graft.
Hi Glen Your tree consists of 2 parts - the top bit (above the graft) is the variety you have chosen to grow (eg Stella etc), the bottom bit (blow the graft) is the rootstock which will determine how big the tree gets. I know little about such things, but if the roots are growing from above the graft, you don't want them getting into the soil as they will take over from your rootstock and tree will not grow to the size you expect - almost certainly it'll get big. I'm sure you'll get more ideas and help from others here A photo would help if you could post one
