True. I'd actually probably go for one of those fence styles that look the same both sides. I like the kinds that look like they are woven from planks of wood.. and let a bit of a air through to circulate around the garden.
I'm not really a wooden fence fan, but do quite like the hit and miss, and palisade styles. Partially as wind can pass through and also because it looks the same on both sides for the hit and miss.
I've just a small picket fence that I'm hoping to erect in an L shape, in some ways it makes sense to have the inside of the fence on the inside of the L.
I'd rather a partition or hedge on the boundary, as the garden is narrow, I knocked a foot off with hedging in another stretch. If there were room I'd almost like a metre of no mans land between!
Documentation doesn't specify, but there's something about if someone erects a fence, they have to maintain it.
Thanks for the suggestions. I thought I'd heard that it was courteous to have the fence outward facing, but partner doubted that.

Might be worth checking the deeds to see the detail. Land registry might be one source of info for you.
I like the "hit & miss" too!
