I'm about to chip a load of branches and was thinking of putting the chippings around the strawberries. Are the wood chippings likely to increase the risk of the fruit going mouldy during a wet summer?
Wood chip will work as a mulch but when it gets into the soil it will reduce the fertility for a while.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
Yes I gathered straw would be best, just don't have any knocking around and I like to recycle. The wood chip will absorb moisture and remain damp, but it will act as a mulch and keep plants moist- Ive a leaky pipe watering system around the plants which keeps the water off the fruit.
This is all very interesting about using mulches and wood chippings.
I have potted some blueberries in ericaceous soil and have mulched them with pine/wood
chippings that are provided by our allotment…I wonder if this would be okay – I believe blueberries like
pine needles as are acidic so I’m
thinking along the lines of pine/wood chippings being okay but I would be interested
to know if anyone else has mulched blueberries…..
I have no idea about the chippings/bark that our allotment
provides- no idea which trees and where they are from – would it be best just
to buy a bag of chippings from a nursery?

I will give it a go and see how they do.
