Planter ideas

I am looking for some ideas for my new planters. I have bought 4 planters (photo attached) which are now hanging on a south facing fence. I am planning on putting trailing petunias in but would like to plant a flower in the centre of each to compliment the putunias. Any ideas would be appreciated. Would have to be something I can easily get frim the local garden centre and that will flower at the same time as the petunias.  Thanks.

Regards,
Jay

Bidens, if yellow fancies you; lobelia (blue); alyssum (white) .

They are pretty baskets. I would choose a geranium as they are more adept to not being wet and won’t matter if you miss a day watering in the summer 😊

I agree.. a red geranium with white petunias and blue lobelia.. nicely patriotic.   :)

Be sure to put plastic inside your basket liner.. and just poke a few holes in the bottom of the plastic for drainage.  It will help protect your fence, and keep the baskets from drying out so quickly.  Water retaining gel is a good idea too.

Post some pictures when you get them all together.. I love the metal design you found.

  • Thanks for the replies. Those are great ideas and I was thinking the exact same things.
I always use water retaining gels in my baskets and line them with plastic as well. Learned my lesson a few years ago. Lol.
I will be sure to post some photos.
    Thanks again.

  • Another vote for bidens. I love the way their long flower stalks branch out among other plants. I also like verbena and bacopa.
Lots of people round here go for baskets of just petunias..probably the surfinia type as they dont go as straggly as the ordinary ones.
They cram them in and end up with stunningly full displays. But then you wouldn't see your nice containers.

If you decide to line with plastic ( I prefer to see coir). But if using plastic make the holes 2 to 3 inches up from the bottom, then the water will stay in there. If you put them in the bottom it will just run straight through
