Weed identification please!

Hi all,. We have noticed this unusual looking plant with  red stems sprout in our border and it wasn't there last year!  Can anyone let me know what it is please?  Thanks!

    You (or someone) planted a peony 'bulb' a couple of years ago and probably thought it had died. They take a year or two to establish.  :)

    I'd scrape that mulch back a bit . They like the sun on the crowns.

    Thanks that is a nice surprise!  We only bought the house 18 months ago so it must not have done anything last year.  We've done a LOT of work on that border clearing out weeds and out of control lavender so guess it has room to grow at last. Will take the advice on the mulch!

    They take a while to get going but are sooooooo worth the wait ... mine is probably five years old ... it had its first flowers last year (3)  ... this year it has 20+ buds 

    Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
