Bee question

  • This year in the garden there are more than normal, big bumble bees! I've never seen so many, they are going in and out of gaps in the Dry stone wall. Before there were any flowers blooming,I was putting sugar/honey water in the gaps for them.

They seem later emerging from hibernation this year as a result of the cold spell. Tend to see them on a mild late Feb/early March when people aren't in the garden quite as a much to notice. They are probably looking for nest locations, will do no harm :) yes sugar and water is the advice rather than honey - as it can spread diseases from nest to nest.

I second Mark's advice. Please do not put out any honey for bees. Bees can only safely eat honey from their own hives. A sugar solution is ideal. There have been lots of red tailed bumble bees flying around. Lovely to see them.

  • Thank you for the info,I wouldn't want to harm them.

I always carry a tiny pot of sugar water in my handbag ready to revive any bees I see struggling I have saved quite a few that way!
